Culture Study: Mythology and Superheroes

With today's culture being so enamored with mythology and super heroes, many Christians are faced with the decision to forgo the entertainment industry while others feel it's no big deal. In my recent article at AGMinistries, I approach this topic with some detail. With this article in mind I thought that we should have an educational study of the mythology that is so widely taught in today's culture.

(*NOTE: This study is for mature teen audiences with parental supervision.)

In my article I tackled the history behind the creation of the minotaur. I came to find out that contrary to popular belief that the minotaur was just a created being, that it in fact was conceived as an offspring of a human woman and a bull in an unnatural love making session. In God's Word we find that this is an abomination to His Word and even in my logical mind I shake my head( and even cringe) at the thought of a woman being intimate with a beast. Now you may think to yourself, "There is NO WAY that is a normal human act." But God in his infinite wisdom knew it was important enough of a topic to include it in His commands that 'Woman and man shall not lie with a beast'.

Leviticus 18:23, " Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion."

Leviticus 20:15, " And if a man
lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast. "

Deuteronomy 27:21, "
Cursed be he that lieth with any manner of beast. And all the people shall say, Amen. "

Exodus 22:19, "
lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death."

These verses are clearly in relation to the intimate desire of a lustful human. Do I think that this applies to a girl allowing her little kitten of puppy to lay on her lap? Of course not! God was very clear that we are to respect and value the lives of our animals and even uses the image of the relationship of a lamb and it's shepherd as his visual aid of our relationship with him.

However evil we think this bestiality act is, God knew it was something He would have to warn us of so many years ago. The sin we see today is not so far fetched. Why do you think that God warned the people in Bible times about this insidious act? You think that this sin is not a prevalent one today. We don't hear about acts of bestiality in the media today, yet Madonna herself posed in an inappropriate manner with a dog in one of her books in the ealry 90's.

As Christians we are to be aware of the world's culture, but not indoctrinated with it. I teach my children an overview of Greek Mythology, yet we do not allow ourselves to be caught up in the details of their stories. There are times when we study the origin of some mythology in order to teach that today's culture is in fact inundated with it and we must be cautious of what we watch and read.

Acts 17:18, "Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection."

You see Greek Mythology goes back to Bible times. The Epicureans thought Paul was a 'babbler setting forth strange gods' because he taught about Jesus and the resurrection. The people of their time thought Paul's stories of Jesus as just a fable, while we see their mythology as fables.

Acts 17:29-30, "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. 30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"

According to Paul, God 'winked' at the notion of their fables, yet now has commanded them to repent. You see, the people believed in other gods and their belief became their religion and their hearts were turned from the Living God and we know that God loves us and is a jealous God. Yes, gos is jealous. Wouldn't you be jealous if your spouse brought a new wife home and you had to now share your spouse's affection with another?

We have a variety of myths and superheroes in today's culture, yet when we begin to give more attention them than to God then we have a problem. My family enjoys superheroes and fantasy, yet we must have proper balance between real life and our relationship with our Saviour.

I would like to invite you to participate in a study with me in regards to our make-believe culture's favorite characters.
