Devotions with Kids

As an Organic Homeschool, our family leans into the most natural approach for our family for education as well as our lives in Christ. We have nothing against other styles that other families follow, but for us..Organic is what works best for us.

Organic Homeschooling, for us, is in between unschooling and homeschooling and we approach our walks with Christ the same way.

{Galatians 3:5 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.}

We lived within a very strict church life for many years and God led us out into the wild blue yonder of Christian living. Talk about FAITH! Stepping out where there is nowhere to step. But He has been so faithful. He is our awesome Teacher. Walking with Christ outside of the traditional ways has been quite an adventure.

So by faith, I decided to go to the Relevant Conference. With everything going on in our lives, leaving California for a few days to attend a conference on the other side of the country would have been considered rebellious by some..since it meant leaving my family behind..but my husband and family were 100% in support of me going...and that is where I met the ladies with Tommy Nelson..and much to my surprise..they already knew who I was. (waving) Hi Abby!

Talk about being personable!

Well, in the gorgeous tote bag we got at the conference were two devotionals; Jesus Calling and Jesus Calling 365 devotions for kids. Well, the team at Tommy Nelsons' Blog is having a Blog Carnival to get our thoughts on these two books and they have 2 free downloads for you to snag when you get over there.

So, here are the questions they posed today:

What do you feel Jesus calling your family to do together to bring you closer to God this month?

Any tips or best practices you’d like to share that have worked for your family?

Well, I'll admit I haven't read the books, but will begin this week. I've been working on reorganizing my schedule since Relevant (Thanks Crystal) So, I need to incorporate this into my upcoming weeks.

But one thing that I do feel our Lord is guiding me in is this... to gently lead my children to the understanding that Christ is in them.

{Colossians 1:27 Christ in you, the hope of glory.}

I feel that pull from God to teach my children as a shepherd would...a shepherd guides while they naturally graze in those green pastures. We believe in introducing thought provoking questions and hypothetical situations to our children to bring them to think deeply. And so I turn to page 1 in the kids devotional (which is for Jan 1) and guess what I found? The devotional is right along the lines of how I teach my children about God. I do hope you'll download the free 2 week series from their post.

'Keep me in your thoughts, let me guide you' (from their download)

Each day I 'listen' and 'look' for our Lord, because I believe that if we are, we will discern Him..He will reveal Himself to us in the everyday things we think don't matter. Well, they matter to Him. I want my children to experience the presence of God each day and by 'listening' and 'looking' for Him, I believe they will. I want my children to be able to discern the voice of God in their little lives.

So, how about you? Are you up for the Tommy Nelson Challenge? Write up your blog post and send it out into the Twitter hashtag stream #JesusCallingKids

In the upcoming weeks I'll share a little bit about how my kids are seeing and hearing our Lord in their everyday lives and what parts of the devotionals has been instrumental in this journey..our spiritual walkabout with God.
